Plug ins are the most advanced of all Joomla extensions. A plug in acts as a go between operating between Joomla and the Editor. A plug-in can intercept output from Joomla and modify it before sending it to the browser. It can do the opposite as well meaning plug-ins can modify data both coming and going. The most general example of a plug in is the WYSIWYG editor. Your website can have any number of Plug-ins, below are a list of reviews on various new plug-ins for Joomla 1.5.
Unlike Plug-ins there is not a clear distinction between Modules and Components. Components almost anything a Module might do while modules can do almost anything a component can do. Components are generally more powerful and diverse while Modules have a more specific purpose. Each page can only have one Component but it can have multiple modules. Modules are generally used for displaying something on your website and have only minimal interaction capabilities. Banners, menus and ads are all standard types of modules. While Galleries and Blogs are standard types of Components. Below are links to Reviews of both Plug-ins and Modules that have recently been developed for Joomla 1.5.
