Where to get Help
- The official Joomla forums.
- Various components have their own support forums; check their websites for details.
- Your website host may provide support for Joomla!.
Joomla Extensions
Joomla! extensions allow you to add extra functionality to Joomla! Extensions are created and maintained by third party developers. Joomla! maintains an official Extensions Directory that you should refer to when looking for functionality. Below are extensions that we feel provide the best solution for various functionality.
- Calendar and Events: By far the best is JEvents (tutorial).
- Ecommerce: VirtueMart is very popular and versatile.
- Editor: A WYSIWYG editor allows you to edit styled content much like a modern word processor. We recommend JCE for being feature rich and relatively bug free.
- Forms: perForms (tutorial) is recognized as being the easiest to use.
- Forum: There are two popular solutions. Joomlaboard is an easy to use native Joomla! extension. SMF Bridge bridges* Joomla! with SMF, the popular forum web application. SMF is what Joomla! uses for the official forums.
- Photo Gallery: Similar to the forum solutions there are two popular photo galleries. RSGallery2 (tutorial) is a native Joomla! photo gallery providing rich functionality. Gallery 2 Bridge bridges* Joomla! with the external web application Gallery 2.
*Whats a Bridge?
Joomla! is an open source web application. But there are many other open source web applications such as Wikimedia (the software that runs Wikipedia) or Drupal (a CMS like Joomla!). A bridge is an extension that connects Joomla! with an external web application. The main benefit is utilizing what is probably a very powerful web application. Disadvantages include being hard to visually and functionally integrate with Joomla!, separate administration and difficulty in upgrading.
Miscellaneous
Most Joomla! related projects have their development tools hosted at the Joomla! Forge. This is where you will download most Joomla! related files.
